Fireworks in July

fireworksWith Independence Day and Pioneer Day festivities in July, here are the restrictions on fireworks for Fairpark residents. Fireworks are allowed July 1-7 and July
21-27 from 11 AM to 11 PM, with fireworks allowed until midnight on the night of the 4th and the 24th.

Be sure to place your used fireworks in a bucket of water for at least 12 hours before throwing them away. Parents are encouraged to supervise children when using fireworks. Keep a 30-foot clearance in all directions from fireworks.
If a firework does not light, do not attempt to re-light the firework or put it in your water bucket—let it sit for an extended period before going near it.

Hot Times in the City

Every year, Fairpark Community residents look forward to summer vacations, camping, family reunions, picnics, and Labor Day. Summertime, however, also brings fires and injuries due to fireworks and outdoor cooking. We want to encourage summer fire safety in our community with helpful information obtained through the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

Think about emergency preparedness. Your ability to get out of your home in the event of a fire depends on advance warning from smoke alarms and advance planning. Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Choose a safe meeting place outside the house. It is a good idea to keep a bell and flashlight in each bedroom

What can you do to prevent outdoor fires? Remove all dead plants, trees and shrubs. Reduce excess leaves, plant parts and low-hanging branches. Replace dense flammable plants with fire-resistant plants. The choice of plants, spacing and maintenance are crucial elements in any defensible space landscaping plan.

Fire Safety Tips

  • Install smoke detectors and change the batteries once a year
  • Post emergency numbers near telephones
  • Have a safe fire escape plan and practice with your family
  • Be careful cooking. Put a lid on a grease fire and reduce heat.
  • Matches and lighters can be dangerous. Educate children.

Fairpark Community Council Hosts SLC Mayoral Candidate Forum

The Fairpark Community Council hosted a Candidate Forum for Salt Lake City Mayor to a packed house at its meeting on June 25 at the Northwest Community Center in Fairpark.  All 5 candidates, or their representatives, participated in the brief introduction and overview of their races, followed by a group Q&A session. The city has initiatives in place that have decreased the carbon footprint, but there is much work still to be done, according to the Mayor. Meet Our New Neighborhood Detective, Officer Valencia

My name is Carlos Valencia and I work for the Salt Lake City Police Department. I have been a Police Officer with Salt Lake for over 9 years and I have been fortunate enough to experience some of the variety of assignments my Department offers.detvalencia

My current position is being assigned as Detective with the Community Intelligence Unit (CIU) in District 1 and 2. This assignment has been very fulfilling because not only do I get to interact with the people of the Rose Park/Fairpark/Glendale community, but it helps me understand their problems and concerns that they face each day in their community.

One of the main problems we face each and every day is property crimes.. Sometimes being a victim of a property crime can be very costly and stressful. But for the bad guy, it can be rewarding and a way to a new life (of crime). We can do numerous things to protect ourselves so that we are not victims.

One of the many ways we can avoid being a vehicle burglary victim is to take our valuables with us, do not leave them in the vehicle while you go to the store or mall. A valuable item can be anything that a bad guy can sell or exchange for other goods that they would care about. Avoid leaving purses, wallets, GPS devices, blankets, bags of any kind, phones, phone chargers, tablets, iPads, CDs, expensive CD decks…etc. Avoid placing valuables under  the seats or anywhere in the vehicle where you think the valuable might be safe. Last but not least, always lock your vehicle. It definitely deters a bad guy from making himself or herself at home in it or steal it.

Home burglaries can occur to anyone, but if we take the necessary steps to protect ourselves we could minimize the chances of having someone break into our homes. Some people have looked into getting alarm systems, or getting
motion-enabled light systems, cameras, surveillance cameras, etc. Other people choose to ensure to lock their doors and windows, or making sure the garage door is shut when they leave. In addition to this, most people ask their neighbor to watch over their place and give them their phone number in case of an emergency or suspicious activity.

Remember, by taking the necessary steps to protect ourselves, we can be more difficult targets for vehicle and home
burglaries.
Thanks, Det. Valencia
